my wife just bought some cheap ones at wal-mart in the men’s section as the women’s didn’t have good enough treads on the bottom to grip anything…

It’s wise that you have realized lightweight shoes are superior to heavy leather boots more suitable to fighting in wars. I’ve made the switch to lightweight cross training shoes and now more common lightweight hiking shoes along with my move toward ultralight backpacking. My pack never weighs more than 25 pounds. But, for someone carrying over 40 pounds (not recommended) a lightweight hiking boot is recommended for more support.

The top models of hiking shoes include Salomon XA Pro 3D, New Balance W708 and WT800, and Montrail Hardrock.

You really don’t need Gore-Tex, and since many people think it isn’t effective in venting the amount of sweat produced by the foot, I wouldn’t waste my money. Feet need to breathe, and in temperatures above freezing, even wet shoes will dry while you’re hiking, providing they’re made of lightweight materials.

The one item that you can not afford to pinch pennies on is your boots. ( $125.00) My pick would be Merrell Phaser Peak Waterproof. They are light and keep your feet dry all day.
