A parent wants to be present as their child grows. They try to be there for playtime and help with their child’s imagination as much as possible. But at some point, the child was want lifelike horse toys to play with instead of pretending to ride the parents around the living room, pretending mommy or daddy is a horse. As the young mind matures, it becomes more fine tuned and aware of details in the world. A child will start to notice that their stuffed horse toys aren’t the same as the horses they have seen in real life. And so, in a desire to make playtime more connected to the real world, children start wanting more detailed toys.
Which is why Breyer Horses make such great gifts. Aside from the fact that the polished and handcrafted horse figurines are not too heavy or pointy so they cannot cause damage, they are also very detailed. The detail allows children to see how horses look at a close up level. A child gets an idea of the real muscles and structure of a horse, instead of the distorted version of horses from rocking horses or stuffed animals. Seeing a toy they trust more as realistic, a child can connect to the toy more.
Sometimes it is a challenge to find a toy that your child may want. Children’s fancies seem to change on a whim, day to day, and it can be hard to keep up. But never forget the power of simplicity. Breyr toys are great because they show lifelike versions of a child’s favorite horse breeds, but the toys also encourage imagination still because they do not come with convoluted play areas for the figurines. This means the Breyer toys can be played with outside, inside, on the couch, on the floor, or in the grass. It all depends on the child’s imagination. Of course, it isn’t always to find the exact breed of horse you want. But as long s you keep your eyes peeled on the internet and at those local garage sales, you are sure to find the Retired Breyer Horses you have in mind.
Remember Breyer the next time you are looking at a toy store in search of the perfect gift.

No other model horse is at the level of Breyer model horses. Every horse is exquistitely crafted and realistic by a series of artisans. For the horse-lover, Breyer model horses are THE horse toy. In fact, they are beyond toys.
Breyer horse models are made to-scale and, except in the case of some of their special runs or fantasy horses, are made to look as realistic as possible. The company also sells an utterly vast variety of models in different breeds, colors, and collector sets. Because of their incredible quality, Breyer horses have lasted since their inception in 1950 and have garnered a huge following among model horse collectors as well as horse lovers who want to be surrounded by sculpted models of their favorite animal. Indeed, Breyer horses have become so renowned that there are whole Breyer model horse shows for model horse collectors.
Breyer manages to keep their collection continually new and exciting by releasing new models each year and retiring a few older models. The retired Breyer models of course become instantly worth far more money for those who have them, and you can readily find a few of them on sale at eBay or at online model horse auction sites. Many models change hands through re-sale and auctions, also. But for other people, they keep hold of their precious “retired” models and revel in the fact that they are part of the lucky ones who have them in their possession.
Amazingly, Breyer never set out to create collectors’ items or even toys. The Breyer Molding Company was a plastics manufacturer in Chicago, Illinois. In 1950, it was commissioned by the drug store chain F.W. Woolworth’s to make a model horse to adorn a mantelpiece clock. Their horse was so life-like and well made that Woolworths received many requests to buy JUST the horse. A living legend was born.
The collections that Breyer offers include:
- The TRADITIONAL Breyer collection makes up the “world’s ‘most asked for’ horses since 1950″ group. These are all hand-painted and each one is slightly one of a kind and realistic. These are sculpted in 1:9 scale.
- The SPECIAL RUNS consists of Breyer horses commissioned by a select group of retailers. These rarer models are collectors’ dreams. The United States Equestrian Team Foundation the Tractor Supply Company are among the customer and Olympic equine athletes equine film stars such as Spirit are among the models.
- The CLASSICS are specially designed for authentic and imaginative play for younger collectors; they give them realistic horses and superior collectibility. These are created at a scale of 1:12.
- The WIND DANCERS are butterfly fantasy horses, and each one is made to embody a different one of the four winds. Breyer says they are “fun, spirited, and gossamer-winged, with brushable manes and tails. Their ethereal wings flutter in the breeze as they float on the gentle winds of the earth, bringing adventure and excitement to those who believe.”
Breyer also creates other accessories especially targeted at younger collectors.
