The Rapid Growth Of Internet Shopping

What do computer skins, green tea and a solitaire engagement ring have in common? All of these items can be bought without ever leaving your home through internet shopping.

Internet shopping is revolutionizing the way that the world shops. Many homes around the world have access to internet shopping. Even third world countries have internet access. The net is allowing people in those countries to work for what most of us would consider to be pennies, but to vastly improve their way of life.

Internet shopping grew along with the internet. As download speeds have become faster, shopping has become more popular. In 1994, a small internet book store called Amazon began. There had been other bookstores started as much as two years earlier, but Amazon took off and ran.

In fact, 1994 seems to have been the time that many of the successful online shopping stores that are still available went live. Pizza Hut first started allowing customers to order their pizza online during this time.

E-bay, the popular auction site where you can buy everything from antique candy wrappers to new cars did not start until 1995. Now the site has grown to be the largest auction company in the world and has sister sites around the globe.

Although it grew slower at first, Craigslist also started in 1995 as an e-mailed list of items for sale in the San Francisco bay area. It now serves at least 570 cities in fifty different countries.

Many of the larger grocery chains allow customers to place orders for groceries online in larger cities. These grocers then use delivery vans to deliver the groceries that you have ordered directly to your home.

Of course, one of the most popular items to order online is the computer itself. Dell had manufactured and sold computers since the 1980s, however it did not start selling computers on its own website until 1996.

Today, you can buy almost anything you are shopping for online. Groceries to computers are available as are used cars to top soil. Whatever it is that you seek, it only takes the use of a search engine to find it.

Today security in a shopping site is of utmost concern. Most retail sites have beefed up security and Paypal offers services that keep you from having to give a credit card number to an online retailer. Online shopping will probably continue to grow over time. There may be a time that many of the big box stores become warehouses that are shipping headquarters for online shopping outlets.
